In Chelsea, Victorian terraces are among the most desirable homes in London. They combine elegant façades and generous proportions with the potential for a transformative terrace house renovation. These projects demand a careful balance: retaining historic character while delivering layouts, finishes, and light-filled spaces that meet the expectations of modern family life.
Such work involves navigating the complexities of period property renovation — from damp-proofing and structural adjustments to access constraints in tight residential streets. A sensitive yet technically robust approach is essential to ensure the success of any Victorian house renovation in Chelsea.
The brief: Victorian House Refurbishment
Our clients sought a full back to brick refurbishment of a Victorian terraced house in Chelsea. The goal was to create a home that respected its Victorian heritage while providing a practical, elegant interior tailored to contemporary living. The scope included reconfiguring internal layouts, introducing more natural light, and elevating the specification of kitchens, bathrooms, and joinery. The vision was for a terraced house refurbishment that would feel both timeless and deeply personal.
What We Did
The design was brought to life through a curated selection of premium suppliers. The kitchen was handcrafted by Plain English, with an Miele range cooker.. Bathrooms were finished with Samuel Heath brassware for understated luxury.
Across the home, Havwoods herringbone flooring provided warmth and continuity, while a palette drawn from Farrow & Ball and Paint & Paper Library introduced subtle depth to the interiors. A rear extension was completed with glazing from IQ Glass, maximising natural light and creating a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor living. Together, these elements established a calm, cohesive scheme that respected the home’s Victorian character while embracing modern craftsmanship.
Final result: Chelsea Terrace Reimagined
This Victorian house renovation transformed a dated terrace into a serene, functional family home.
The open-plan kitchen and living space now flow seamlessly into the garden, while the bathrooms pair natural stone and contemporary fixtures for a refined look. Bespoke wardrobes, a walk-in wardrobe, and fitted joinery enhance storage and comfort, while period property renovation details like sash windows and plaster cornicing were retained.
The rear extension with full-height glazing creates a bright dining space that connects seamlessly to the garden. Natural light enhances the calm palette and textured finishes, balancing period character with modern family living.
The living room retains original period features such as cornicing and a feature fireplace, paired with contemporary furnishings and layered lighting to create an elegant yet comfortable family space.
The bespoke kitchen by Plain English features hand-painted cabinetry, an Miele range cooker, and brass accents. Open shelving and glazing enhance natural light, while herringbone flooring adds warmth and continuity.
The result is a refined, meticulously crafted home that honours its Victorian heritage while delivering light-filled spaces and modern comforts suited to family life in the heart of Chelsea.
